Win Tickets For L.A. Derby Dolls This Saturday!

Fight Crew vs. Sirens by Stalkerazzi

The L.A. Kings’ hockey season is just getting started; the L.A. Dodgers’ baseball season is mercifully drawing to a close. The L.A. Derby Dolls‘ roller derby season is in high gear, though, and this Saturday night you can see the most exciting sport in Los Angeles as the Fight Crew battle the Sirens in a race toward the 2010 Championship (in December.) Keep reading to find out how you can win your free tickets.

Banked track roller derby is an aggressive, fast-paced, full-contact sport. These women may look nice all dolled up in skates and fishnets, but do not be fooled. They are fierce competitors who give everything they’ve got on the track in order to achieve victory.

If you’ve already been to the Doll Factory, then you know. If you haven’t, you just have to experience it for yourself. Surrounded by the roar of a sold out crowd, you’ll watch a high-speed chase on the track that will leave you breathless. Before the game and at half time, you’ll enjoy various food vendors including Hot Dog On A Stick and Garage Pizza, ice cold beer from Alex’s Bar, and a vendor village packed with jewelery, t-shirts, skate gear, and all sorts of other stuff. There’s even a live band at half-time (Eternal Youth.)

Here is a preview of Saturday night’s bout:

(In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out that I may be a bit biased toward the sport of women’s banked track roller derby, and the L.A. Derby Dolls specifically. I am a member of the Enforcers (referee team.) In truth, I’d have been happy to tell you how awesome it is, long before I ever became a ref.)

  1. In my opinion, Tara Armov is the queen of the Fight Crew, and, well, possibly roller derby as a whole. Tara has graced my league with her presence as a guest coach in the past and the second she steps foot on the rink her presence demands immediate respect. For me derby is all about Commanding the rink; Being aware of and controlling both yourself and your pack and Pulverizing a jammer… all while looking damn good. Tara is a commander, a controller and a pulverizer; and she looks damn good!

Vote Tara Armov for Fight Crew Mayor 2010!

  2. Sorry for the delay, folks. I was away from the Intertubes for a bit. Contest closed at 9:00am. Winner has been notified; just awaiting confirmation. There were so many entries that I tossed them all in a hat (I used a Derby Dolls Army cap for this one) and picked a winner at random.

Whoa. So many entries! If it were a popularity contest, it looks like V.Lee would’ve run away with it. Clearly all of the skaters (and refs) have lots of fans, which is great. A fantastic sport which was unknown to so many only a few years ago is growing bigger all the time.

Even if you didn’t win the tickets, you’re all still winners in my book. Get over to http://derbydolls.com/tickets/ now to get tickets for Saturday’s bout! There are still some left, but don’t wait, as this bout (like all the others) will sell out. Good luck to both of the teams. It’s sure to be an epic battle.

I’ll be there Saturday night, too. If you see me (Third Degree Burns!,) stop me and say hello.

  3. I realize the giveaway is over, but I gotta get this out there:

Tara Armov is my favorite Derby Doll of all time; not only is she the quintessential rollergirl that plays to the crowd, is an amazing skater, and would be terrifying to skate against, she’s also an extremely kind momma bear and gives a lot of herself to the worldwide network of derby girls.

  4. I just wanted to say we went there Saturday night for the first time and it was ridiculously fun. I was sure I wouldn’t be able to make head or tail of the action, but in fact it was really easy to follow, and the quick pace kept it exciting right to the end. We’re definitely going to be repeat customers.

  5. @ Ballookey: Great to hear! So glad you had a good time. We do our best to make it exciting for all the fans. Next bout is only 2 1/2 weeks away: San Diego Derby Dolls’ Swarm vs. the Tough Cookies on 10/23. That’s bound to be another epic battle. Get your tickets online now (derbydolls.com/la) and we’ll see you there.
