For the record, I'm OK with accepting donations, as well. My beef with with the lack of contribution from AEG and the Jackson family. Luckily, I understand the LA City Attorney's office is looking into how to get those two groups to pay for their own event.

@rodger
Did you read the entire post?

I DID call upon the Jackson Family and AEG to pay for this.

But I also have no problem with the City of Los Angeles begging for help. If people around the world felt that they got something out of today's service, I am A-OK with the City accepting donations from around the world to defray costs.

Are you freaking kidding me? This is for the Jacksons and AEG to pay for. Or maybe Al Sharpton can raise some funds, the man who proclaimed at the Apollo Theater tribute last week that Michael Jackson "paved the way for Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama." Really? So screw Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Robert Johnson, James Brown, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong ... need I go on? Some perspective is very, very much lacking here.

The Jackson family withheld 9,000 tickets (nearly half) for their invited guests. They will continue to receive income for generations from Michael's royalties. They have (apparently) not paid a single dime toward the great expense that this memorial will bring to this city.

AEG has their name plastered all over this. They are currently receiving untold benefits from the publicity. They will undoubtedly make enormous amounts of money from DVDs of the memorial, rehearsal footage, etc. They have (apparently) not paid a single dime toward the great expense that this memorial will bring to this city.

The city (the tax payers) of Los Angeles will pay upwards of $3.5 million for security and other services. Those residents not "lucky" enough to get tickets through the online distribution have been told repeatedly to stay away from the area entirely. And now we (and others) are being asked to donate money for an event we were told to stay away from. How many businesses lost a full day of productivity (and income/wages) because they had to tell their employees to stay home today?

I don't deny the importance of Michael Jackson's legacy, nor the importance of properly memorializing him. It just pisses me off that those who stand to profit the most (AEG; sales and publicity) and those who received other benefits (Jackson family; half of all tickets, on-going security at event, home(s), cemetery, etc.) are contributing nothing to this while the cash-strapped residents of L.A. foot the bill.

I wish MJ was alive again. At least when he was alive I didn't have to read, see or hear about him. Use his f'ing royalties to pay for this f'ing mess.

Nice post, I wonder who came up with the idea and who made it happen so fast. Nice to see some potential offset on the costs since it doesn't appear AEG or the Jackson family so far have given a penny towards the city costs.
