love this post. growing up in small town oklahoma, i came across x on – of course – mtv. being something of a religious nut (i burned all my rock record at 18), i was both fascinated by and scared-for-my-soul by x (ironically, it was billy zoom who scared me the most). in college, dorm friends (the cool ‘uncool’ ones) turned me onto x and impressed upon me their importance in the pantheon of all-that-matters culture-wise. moving to los angeles after leaving a marriage and a career training middle managers and pr hacks (i.e. as an academic in communication), x albums were the skeleton key that helped me make sense of this weird, wonderful place. thanks, travis, for reminding me of that tearful, joyous time.

The song is reputed to be about Exene’s friend Fay Heart (AKA Farrah Faucet-Minor)who was either “a racist bigot” or doing a performance as one.

As it so happens, the Bad Brains are one of the only bands from that time and place that I still listen to. They used to play shows at places like the Jamaican Cultural Center or some such and there was always this crazy mixture of rastas and punks (pasty white kids with crew cuts and stoned black guys with dreds).
