Two Boots is some of the best pizza I've had in NYC. If the menu is the same I cannot recommend highly enough the "Larry Tate"...

Now, can anyone tell me what happened to Vito of Vito's Pizza on Vermont? I know he closed a few years ago, but a guy that good at making awesome pizza can't be gone forever.

I'm waiting for the East Coast haters to attack this one. Spencer's attack was just East Coast hater lite, haha.

I used to go to Two Boots after a college buddy moved to Avenue A. It was a really good place, but much of the ambience was due to the surrounding neighborhood, which was still in its Iggy Pop/Joey Ramone heroin phase. I haven't been there in a while. Hopefully The Gap hasn't opened there yet. While they're at it, maybe they can import the Pyramid Club and King Tut's Wah-Wah Club from the neighborhood too.

I'm trying really hard not to be offended by your implication that LA needs to import "NYC institution[s]" in order to be less hate-worthy.

As for pizza by the slice, Garage, Hard Times and Cheech's (and, I think, Tomato Pie, but don't quote me on that one) all offer slices in your neighborhood alone. If you're up for a trip, Abbot's Pizza Co. in Venice does slices that are worth driving for with a number of less hawsome but still good by-the-slice joints in between. It's not like slices are a rarity around here.

I have yet to try Cheech's or Two Boots Pizza, but Hard Times Pizza on Griffith Park Blvd., and right around the corner from Nicky D's, my favorite Silver Lake / Los Feliz / Echo Park area pizza.
