The filter papers are pricey--you can't use the Melitta type that have the bottom and edge stamped together unless you use two, one inside the other. I got some fine screening, made a holder for the paper filter and it works fine. I also make a pot of tea the same way (using loose tea, which I prefer). I think Chal may be referring to the date of the origin of the coffee maker...and perhaps that it's low tech...
