Oh I just read that part about California ones not being owned, but they are linked on the website...so maybe check that out. I'm just commenting. Sorry if it's not, but why is it linked.

I think it's pretty sad that we live in a city where we have to debate should we boycott something because a corporation that makes millions of dollars pays their employees so little that they are so far in the hole that unemployment might land them in the street. That's a sad state of affairs and makes me think if that's the kind of company this is, in addition to its other sick offenses that a boycott of it would be a great idea. And tag on a livable wage component and company sponsored health care for all its employees.

WKS can more than afford that.

Lets not forget this company also runs the Corner Bakery Cafe, so while a vegetarian like myself has never indulged in eating murdered chickens, I have had a coffee or two at this place.

Here are some addresses to places we all innocently frequent.

8th & Figueroa
801 S. Figueroa
Los Angeles, CA 90017
P: (213) 239-0424
F: (213) 239-0375

Burbank
800 N. San Fernando Ave.
Burbank, CA 91502
P: (818) 846-1256
F: (818) 846-1319

Pasadena
345 South Lake
Pasadena, CA 91101
P: (626) 578-1281
F: (626) 578-9048

Westwood
1019 S. Westwood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90024-2902
P: (310) 824-1314
F: (310) 824-1280

Encino
15626 Ventura Blvd.
Encino, CA 91436
P: (818) 981-7514
F: (818) 981-7569

I like the fact the first three are easy to get to via public transit. Go Metro.

The El polo in Sunset Junction on the pro prop 8 list. To boycott or not? Well, about 1/3 of the people who work there are gay and like 100% of the employees who work there live in the sunset junction neighborhood and most everyone in the community eats there (decent healthy food cheap). So if all the gay and gay supportive community boycott, all these people will be laid off, thus hurting almost everyone in the community, gay and strait.

This is a hard decision.

Just curious, rodger--do you feel that civil rights protestors that boycotted businesses also unfairly hurt the employees of stores with racist policies? Just want you to be consistent in your ethics.

Is there a comprehensive list of all donors to Prop 8? I only seem to find the ones that list contributions of $1000 or more.

Usually in a boycott situation, the aggrieved folks tell the place of business what the grievance is, and that they plan to boycott unless the business does something to make it right. Perhaps in this case, making it right might be something like the business makes a contribution to an opposing group to offset the one they initially made. The ideal situation, I think, is the business makes it right and the boycott isn't necessary. Then the workers aren't hurt in any way (which they could be if a boycott was truly successful and the owner had to let employees go, cut their pay, cut their benefits, etc.) Yes, it is a form of coercion, and it probably would not be effective unless a whole lot of people participate in a noisy, organized way.

Last time I checked, minimum wage employees at El Pollo Loco are paid hourly.

They get paid regardless of how many sales are made at a location. They don't get tips. They don't get bonuses based on sales.

When you boycott something like ELP, the people you hurt most are the ones who are looking at the bottom line.

Yes, by all means, please do hurt minimum wage workers by employing ethical consumerism to put them out of a job because of their employer's political and ethical sensibilities. I mean, in today's economy it shouldn't be too hard for them to find work, right?
