Just 9 nine years earlier, the landmark case of Perez v. Sharp recognized that bans on interracial marriage violated the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.

Marriage is thus something more than a civil contract subject to regulation by the state; it is a fundamental right of free men.

So, Isaac Gallegos, a Mexican-American man, and Susan, his blushing white bride, were wed.

The year was 1957.
