Two big gallery events are set for this weekend in my corner of LA. Ruth666 beat me to the draw by telling you already about “Abandoned” over at Segil Fine Arts.
Free munchies and booze, light jazz along with some great Art will be found at the new Route 66 Gallery opening 7/12. The Aztec Hotel is located at 305 W Foothill Blvd, Monrovia CA.
The Route 66 Gallery at the Historic Hotel is the one I am most jazzed over. Kathie Reece who owns the Aztec was approached by Ron Pettie who already curates MAFA’s teaching gallery & Night Owl Gallery in the lobby at the Aztec,. He asked if it would be possible to use the windows of the old Coffee Shop for displaying some art. Turning the Aztec into an artists destination and colony has been a goal of Katies for a while and things escalated. The long empty space blossomed to a full fledged gallery with a very different twist for the area.
This gallery is different in that it won’t have 4 white walls. It will not have any “no food or drink” signs posted all over. It will have comfy chairs with a big table in the center of the room where you can dip in to the many Art History and Art books loaned by Ron to peruse at your leisure while sipping on coffee.
In the coming weeks they will start a series of Guest Lectures by artists on a variety of different themes. Tied to many of these lectures will include hands on teaching on creating your own pieces.
The opening exhibit theme will be “California in Bloom” with art produced by many LA area artists. The exhibits will generally run 5 weeks before being rotated out and a new themed show starting.
As a little disclosure I am on the MAFA board. I have 4 pieces in this opening as well. If you want to meet up with me Saturday you need to make it early as I have to head out to another event by 7 that evening.
