A friend took Amtrak roundtrip from LA to SF a few weeks ago and told me this: Two and a half hours late getting to SF. Four and a half hours late getting back to LA.

Buyer beware.

The Amtrak would be more practical if it didn't have to yield right of way to frieght trains. It once took me 24 hours to get from Portland to San Francisco, and the friend I was travelling with commented that she had just been in Vietnam and Thailand and the trains were much more reliable. It's a real pity we don't have a more functional train system, because it's so much more enjoyable than flying...

We just rode the Coast Starlight from San Jose to Union Station and really enjoyed it. Granted we were coming back from a funeral and so taking it slow was really what we wanted. It was a gorgeous day, the seats were comfy (we got a roomette and it was cheaper than 2 last minute tickets on Southwest plus meals!) and it was a great relaxing way to return to "real life."
