Yuleblogging LA: Meet on Fairfax for some coffee and a kugel

Mmm… latkes, as enjoyed by Choctopus, used under Creative Commons.

Save Ferris scores a yuletide hat trick by not only successfully transplanting “Christmas Wrapping” from New York to Los Angeles, but also practically transforming it into a Hanukkah song. Instead of just covering the Waitresses’ perennial hit, this SoCal ska band rewrote every lyric, while retaining the spirit and intent of the original.

The Waitresses version, written by Chris Butler, mentions ski trips, “frozen landscapes,” and grocery shopping at the A&P.

All that Save Ferris retains is the chorus, “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, But I think I’ll miss this one this year,” (which is amended at the end to “Couldn’t miss this one this year”), and replaces the story of a missed and found love connection with the tale of a Jewish girl in Silverlake dealing with holiday burnout and a resistance to Christmas.

As far as rewrites go, this one is practically brilliant. And especially for Angelenos who’ll identify with the local references, simple a great holiday tune.

sidenote: I believe this track also debuted on a Kevin & Bean Christmas album – 1999’s “Last Christmas.”

After the jump, the original lyrics and then Save Ferris’ homage.

“Christmas Wrapping”
Lyrics by Chris Butler, (c) 1981 Future Fossil Music, BMA [link]

“Bah, humbug!” No, that’s too strong
‘Cause it is my favorite holiday
But all this year’s been a busy blur
Don’t think I have the energy

To add to my already mad rush
Just ’cause it’s ’tis the season.
The perfect gift for me would be
Completions and connections left from

Last year, ski shop,
Encounter, most interesting.
Had his number but never the time
Most of ’81 passed along those lines.

So deck those halls, trim those trees
Raise up cups of Christmas cheer,
I just need to catch my breath,
Christmas by myself this year.

Calendar picture, frozen landscape,
Chilled this room for twenty-four days,
Evergreens, sparkling snow
Get this winter over with!

Flashback to springtime, saw him again,
Would’ve been good to go for lunch,
Couldn’t agree when we were both free,
We tried, we said we’d keep in touch.

Didn’t, of course, ’til summertime,
Out to the beach to his boat could I join him?
No, this time it was me,
Sunburn in the third degree.

Now the calendar’s just one page
And, of course, I am excited
Tonight’s the night, but I’ve set my mind
Not to do too much about it.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I’ll miss this one this year.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I’ll miss this one this year.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I’ll miss this one this year.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I’ll miss this one this year.
Hardly dashing through the snow
Cause I bundled up too tight
Last minute have-to-do’s
A few cards a few calls
‘Cause it’s r-s-v-p
No thanks, no party lights
It’s Christmas Eve, gonna relax
Turned down all of my invites.

Last fall I had a night to myself,
Same guy called, halloween party,
Waited all night for him to show,
This time his car wouldn’t go,

Forget it, it’s cold, it’s getting late,
Trudge on home to celebrate
In a quiet way, unwind
Doing Christmas right this time.

A&P has provided me
With the world’s smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?

So on with the boots, back out in the snow
To the only all-night grocery,
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
In the line is that guy I’ve been chasing all year!

“I’m spending this one alone,” he said.
“Need a break; this year’s been crazy.”
I said, “Me too, but why are you?
You mean you forgot cranberries too?”

Then suddenly we laughed and laughed
Caught on to what was happening
That Christmas magic’s brought this tale
To a very happy ending! ”

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
Couldn’t miss this one this year!
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
Couldn’t miss this one this year!

“Christmas Wrapping”
The Save Ferris version [link]

Ho Ho Ho woke up this morning with a scary feeling
Realized it was November first
Christmas oh my god its nearing
What am I to do I said
Then I covered up my head
Prayed for sleep for two more months until this holy mess is over
Wasn’t that lucky I turned on the TV
Beanie Babies on the news
Biggest selling gift this year
What’s a tired Jew to do?
So TV off, Try to escape, Called my Friend from Silver lake
Said to meet on Fairfax for some coffee and a kugel

Talk about our fear and dread of tinsel lights and parties
Suddenly like a bad dream
Fairfax was transformed into a holiday paradise everywhere was Hanukkah
Shiny Sparkle blue and white isn’t this a little soon
I got up quick ran to the mall
Before my pain got any worse
What a stupid thing to do
I’m a sitting duck in Santa’s zoo
Suddenly I couldn?t walk
I couldn?t breath I couldn?t move
Children running everywhere
Screaming tis this season

Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
But I think Ill miss this one this year
Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
But I think Ill miss this one this year

Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
But I think Ill miss this one this year
Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
But I think Ill miss this one this year

December first the pains have gone
Thought about Adams Hanukkah song
He forgot to mention me
That’s OK his song was better
Photograph on Santa’s lap
Now over my fear of shopping
Bought gifts for all my goyim friends
One for each, not eight
Sorting cards from all my friends
Sweet of them to take the time
One pile for all the Christmas cards from friends who just don?t get it yet
Hanukkah day on overload I just cannot stop eating
I have so many latke that my tush is going to explode

All I walk it off and so I walk to the Kabala Center just to kill some time I
thought I spotted Madonna
Christmas Day Hanukkahs done
Woke up feeling funny
Maybe its cause I lost half my hair and I have spent all of my money
Whats a Jew to do today?
LA is a ghost town
Looks just like another year of movies and Chinese food
Then suddenly I laughed and laughed and caught on to that was happening
Christmas magic brought this tale to a very happy ending

Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
I couldn’t miss this one this year
Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
But I couldn’t miss this one this year

Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
But I couldn’t miss this one this year
Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
But I couldn’t miss this one this year

  1. That is brilliant, even better than the original. I believe I heard that on KROQ back in the day. Thanks for the memories. NOW find something from Weird Al, he’s my parody hero.

  3. a.) Love Save Ferris’ version of that song!

2.) There are enough traffic related posts on this site that the above comment spam could’ve at least been dumped somewhere it was at least loosely on-topic. If anything annoys me more than a spammer, it’s a lazy spammer.
