AMPTP breaks off talks… again.

From United Hollywood:

As we prepared our counter-offer, at 6:05 p.m., Nick Counter came and said to us, in the mediator’s presence: “We are leaving. When you write us a letter saying you will take all these items off the table, we will reschedule negotiations with you.” Within minutes, the AMPTP had posted a lengthy statement announcing the breakdown of negotiations.

“These items” means nearly everything still on the table.

More details at Deadline Daily. WGA response at United Hollywood.

This comes after the WGA urged the studios to stay at the table with them, through the holidays if necessary, so they could come to an agreement that worked for everybody. Clearly the studios only want an agreement that works for them. I am starting to come around to Kent’s way of thinking.

  1. If anyone wants info on how to get started with podcasting and distributing your own shows I would be glad to do it. I can give a group presentation, too, if there is a quorum of people who want it. Could we get access to some space at the WGA?

I am currently teaching Podcasting and New Media for Writers at UCLA Extension and I have plenty of “getting started” material to share.

For the first time in our history, creative people have the ability to not only create their shows, but distribute them around the world. I talk about this fact with everyone I know and meet and would love to show writers just how easy it is, especially during this difficult time.

For those in the Orange County area, I am speaking (for free) at the OC Podcasters meeting this Wed, Dec 12 at 630pm. Visit http://ocpodcasters.com/ for more info and location information.

  2. I think the root of the problem, for the negotiations anyway, is that the moguls making the decisions have little to no risk of a continued strike impacting their lives. They could quit now and retire in relative prosperity.
