One of my most favorite events is this Sunday 5-8:30 in Monrovia’s Libary Park. It’s the Old Town Food Wine and Jazz Festival which is held annually to benefit local non-profit orgainzations who do so much for the community. How cool is that….great food, wine, jazz and a tax deduction on top of it.
This years beneficiary is the Monrovia Public Library Foundation. This is the second time this group has been the lucky group to receive the proceeds from the “Wine and Jazz Festival” as us locals call it. For good reason too~we voted this spring, and approved a great big, state of the art library that will need to be furnished and stocked. This group has been busy raising funds for a couple of years now to ensure we get the best possible resources in the new facility.
The setting is pretty cool under the giant Morton Bay Fig tree all the way to the band shell. Various merchants have great food and wine samplings that is covered in your admission. There will be live music again this year, Jazz of course. The artist coming is Kay Martin and promises to bring a fusion of Jazz and Brazilian music to keep us entertained.
This is a community event with many of the restaurants and other merchants providing ample goodies to sample. And the samples are generous so plan on being very well indulged. I’ll be walking that night, and you must plan on having a designated driver in your group as I have yet to leave there without a good buzz and a full belly.
A couple of years ago while were there we stumbled across this great little wine from the Wine of the Month Club (who incidently are also headquarted here in Monrovia). It was the Gaetano D’Aquino Bardolino pictured here. (Pic by me from the trusty che-ez it get’s bigger but why bother as it doesn’t get better). The wine is a terrific fruity, but not sweet red, light on the tannins and such a deal it’s our “house red” that we keep stocked for whenver we just want a nice red with dinner. Good stuff, grab a bottle sometime yourself as a test.
The Wine of the Month Club guys are pouring 6 wines, 3 reds and 3 whites Sunday. In the red category they will have Miser Meritage from the Cheapskate Vinyards, Gum Bear cab/shiraz/merlot and an Ironstone Cab/Franc. For the whites they will have a Martin Fierro Chardonnay, a Torrontes, and Alianca Barrada. While you are at their booth let them know “frazgo” sent you. It won’t get you anywhere but it’s nice to let them know one of their fans is spreading the good word.
Finally after all the food and drink there are ample other ways to part with your money to support the cause. There are silent auctions with all sorts of goodies from local businesses and artists.
