Visit Oaxaca, Mexico without Leaving the City

For this, our first leg of our journey, I would like to invite you to the fine estado of Oaxaca, Mexico.

This Saturday and Sunday, at Normandie Park, los Oaxaqueños of LA will be having their annual Guelaguetza. If you have ever eaten at any of the Oaxacan restaurants of the same name, then you will know that the food is AMAZING. My personal favorite are the chapulines, small grasshoppers best eaten with Queso Oaxaqueño rolled into a tortilla. If you are not that adventurous, try a Clayuda with Chorizo. mmmMMM tasty!

I love going with my mom to these eating-fests. She likes the traditional dancing and clothing, and I love the food. If you can’t make it out to the festival, then try one of the restaurants. There you can toast your happiness with a Garra de Tigre (Tiger’s Claw), a margarita made with Mezcal. Oh yeah, my mom loves these too.

  1. I love the Guelaguetza at Sepulveda and Palms, right on the corner. But I admit that grasshoppers are a little too…buggy…for me. In any case, their mole tortillas are astonishing. Thanks for the tip.

  2. that is most definitely a typo. OOPS. i’ll fix it.

on a side note, my cousin, who hails from Chiapas, used to get mad at me when I would tell her she lived in CHIS, which is both the abbrev. for Chiapas and a Spanish slang term meaning “piss”.
