Fred Brito story to air Tuesday night on Dateline NBC

Picture%2012.pngProof that everything Fred Brito says isn’t a lie: the one hour Dateline NBC episode about him that he’s been hyping for over a year is scheduled to air this Tuesday, April 24th, at 8pm. From the official site:

Josh Mankiewicz takes viewers inside the mind of someone who’s not just a con man, but also a world-class imposter who has reportedly tricked a state senator, The Red Cross, celebrities, a prestigious medical school and even the Catholic Church.

It will be interesting to see what angle they take, but based on inside tips and a quote from Mankiewicz published last month, I don’t think Brito will be portrayed as heroic:

One of the confounding things about Fred’s story is he has told so many lies to so many people over so many years that even he can’t remember what is true or not.

Fred Brito, now living in Las Cruces, New Mexico, was working in a high paying fund raising position at UCLA in 2005 when he was arrested, and fired, when his employers learned he was hired using an alias and made no mention he was on parole. A couple months later, Brito was again fired from another well paid job doing fundraising with the American Red Cross in Pasadena, where again he was using a false name. Surprisingly, he was able to work there for a month after the LA Times ran a front page expose about him.

The Brito “saga” is indeed fascinating, as the above is merely the tip of the iceberg. I have a timeline of Brito’s exploits on a previous post, with follow up entries here, where I discovered he was leaving comments accusing me of getting him drunk, trying to have sex with him, and stealing his watch… here, where I break the news that he was effectively fired again in New Mexico, from another fundraising gig (albeit a low paying, part time one), for being hired under another assumed name… and here, where the local Las Cruces newspaper finally catches up with what I’ve been reporting here.

On Fred Brito’s current blog “How To Catch a Con”, he boasts of being the “World Renowned Master of the Con” and “The Benevolent Con”, and offers to give seminars to teach people how to proactively keep from hiring guys like him, and provides a list of his accomplishments in decepting employers from the National Kidney Foundation to A Place Called Home (a charity assisting “at-risk” youths).

  1. After two years of working on this hour long segment with Produder, Jessica DeVera, I am glad that it will finally air.

According to my Publicist (Karen Ammond)and Literary Agent (Bill Gladstone)… whatever DATELINE says… good or bad will just add to the already incredible interest in my upcoming book co-written with me by William “Bill” L. Simon of Los Angeles.

Already, I have been inundated with requests. I expect to be pretty busy as soon as the segment airs.

Like I always say…. “The Best is Yet to Come!”

As of right now we have the book coming out, A feature length Documentary by Michael Wranovics, and a number of other projects under development with other media.

I start the Seminar Circuit in June… So I hope all of you who have been so infatuated and crazed about my story will come out. Sorry, No free tickets.

As they say in Show Business…. And thats a WRAP!

  2. Well, he didn’t actually get away with it. He’s served a bunch of time in Canada, California and Arizona.

One interesting side effect. Since he would otherwise be a neighbor of mine, for the first time I appreciate California’s three-strikes law.

Who’s doing the mash-up of the Dateline show?

  3. After watching Date Line this evening, I do believe that Fred has changed. I will purchase his book when published.Very interesting!

  4. Yes, there is no doubt “Fred Brito” has changed. And will change again, soon.

I’m very interested in the new book too! And the new movie, the new seminar series, the new consulting businesses, the new tour on the college lecture circuit, the new not-for-profits, the new Dateline or Geraldo or Jerry Springer.

In fact, now that I’m thinking about it, maybe what “Fred Brito” really needs is his own fan website so we can all keep track of him, wherever he goes.

  5. Fred…
    Your a Sharp Cat…
I believe many People are interested in your past and certainly will follow your future. Your a gifted man, so overcoming any stigmas from the past is water downstream. Have You considered getting into advertising? Ad Campaigns?

  6. His story was not interesting, his change for the better is not believable, he got “fired and hired” yet again, his charisma is sorely lacking. He just made his con-face known to lots more people so hopefully there will be fewer suckers. In a few years, he will be crying about how this show ruined his opportunities for legitimate work and thats why he has to sell pot brownies to children.

  7. This hype was started by news boy, and sometimes potential city council candidate, tireless self promoter, sloppy reporter(Read about his latest gaff-or was it an attempt to hurt a competitor? The party in question being the Highland Park News-in the NortheastLA Yahoo Group)Eddie Revira,of The Arroyo Seco Journal, on community activist, and LA County Sheriff employee, Joe Walker’s Yahoo group. And it was blown totally out of proportion. Mr. Revira has even suggested that Fred Britto was a child molester! It has all been childish and hurtful.
Hurtful to me because a person I had a political disagreement with, a Mr. Robb Schraff, has since used the oppertunity to accuse me of being Fred, on Mr. Walker’s list. I realize it is a cheap attempt to minimize and marginalize my opinion on that community list. I have complained both to Mr.Walker and to Mr.Schraff, to no avail. They laugh at me.
Now, ironically,it is the same senseless, vindictive ranqour between nieghbor’s on Mr. Walker’s group, that has lended more popular exposure of a con-man,who wanted just that, exposure!
Are you satisfied, NortheastLA Yahoo Group?
