Stabbing Death in Hollywood – No Charges Filed

Michael Baskin, a 34 year old white man detained in the stabbing death of a 34 year old black man, will not be charged “because the homicide was justifiable. From Jill Leovy at The Homicide Report:

(Police) said the man who died jumped out of a car attacked Baskin with his fists without provocation, saying he would kill him. Baskin, who had been on his way to a club, stabbed him with a knife in self-defense, they said.

The incident occurred in the 6400 block of DeLongpre Avenue, on the same city block as the Cabana Club, Sideways Lounge (on Ivar) and Amoeba Music (on Sunset).

Do club goers normally carry knives for self-defense?

Correction: I mistakenly posted the individual’s last name above originally as Blaskin.

  1. I carry a knife and pepper-spray on me every day (the knife isn’t for defense, but I guess it’ll do). Not that unusual. Odd for some tool to jump out of a car and start wailing on a dude though.

  2. I carry a knife and pepper spray too. I’ve been attacked in LA twice at random. No – I’m not a thug – I actually work as a minister in a local christian group and I’m closer to 50 than I’d like to admit :-)

I’m not sure, but why don’t you muse on their race and what that has to do with this a bit more? I’m sure that has something to do with why you posted this…right?

  4. Call me crazy but if you need a knife AND pepper spray, maybe it’s time to consider going to a different club.

  5. Um…don’t the courts usually decide if it was justified? NOT the police? I am really disturbed by this.

Most things don’t actually make it all the way to a real court docket. I believe it’s the DA’s office that determines whether or not to press charges in a case like this. It doesn’t say the police made the decision, just that that’s who told Leovy.

but why don’t you muse on their race and what that has to do with this a bit more?

Did you bother to click the link? Because that’s pretty much straight from the linked article. Hmmmm…now you seem to the be the one that’s making unfounded assumptions.

Ha, maybe. But speaking as somebody who was assaulted and stabbed in broad daylight while walking down the beach, you never know when you’re going to need to be prepared.

  6. The police need to decide whether or not to press charges.

It doesn’t mean they won’t later, or that they won’t continue to investigate.

But, based on the limited information, it looks like we’re relying on the words of a living man as to what happened. My guess is there were witnesses to corroborate his side of the story.

Still, the idea that anyone is carrying a knife on their way to a club seems a little odd. Without a doubt there are more details to the story that I’d like to find out.

  7. I’ve known the man that was stabbed to death, for a very long time, and not once has he been at a rage to where he would go to the lengths of actually killing another human being !!
People say alot of things, especially when they are at their most angriest moments, I believe that he was provoked to make him even get out of the car.
I don’t understand why this can be justifiable if only one man had used only his fists, while the other man, in self defense used a knife and stabbed the man to death….How can this be justifiable ?????? I don’t understand….
    It’s awful ! I’ve now lost a friend, someone else has lost a son and a brother….
I hope Michael Baskin, the man who stabbed my friend to death will suffer some consequences for his actions…

  8. I knew the man that was stabbed as well and to tell you the truth, I have never seen him angry. Oh trust me, there is more to this story than what is being told. Fists and a knife, how can you weigh the two… You can not. Justice must be served here. It feels like Baskin is getting away with murder and that is exactly what it was “MURDER”. It is very hard to beleive that a wonderful man is gone over something so senseless. RIP… You were loved MB.
