Gosh! This was written a while ago,but I know the canyon very well. Every nook and cranny. There is one very distinct pentagram that I cannot explain away as just high school, heavy metal shenanigans. And it actually has been there for years. The water tower that is up the hill ,on the fire road, from the end of Skyline Drive, has a pentagram made of small rocks inside of it. There is an old rusted panel you can move to crawl inside the dry tower. It has been in there for years. You ever want a REAL tour of the canyon, let me know! I am on Facebook!

Darleene,
I had trouble finding a photo of TC and just thought I should use a Google Maps image. At least that way folks would know where TC is located. I don't think the memorial was for Gloria Gaxiola. She died in 2002, and my guess is that you were not in high school that recently.

Chavo,
Yeah, there's not much proof to the rumors. Folks who visit say it's creepy, but it's a canyon full of windy trails and a narrow windy road abutting cliff. Of course that's gonna be creepy. I think the creepiest things about it are the crimes associated with it. I didn't learn until recently that Gloria was killed right near the Hacienda Heights side of the canyon.

David,
I hate menudo, but I know plenty of people who love it. I guess they're Satanists?

John,
Thanks for the insight. Most of the stuff I found online leads me to believe that the crimes connected to TC don't have anything to do with Satanic rituals.

I have known people that belonged to the Church of Satan. These were not people taken to making much of an effort to do anything. The last thing they would do would be hike to the wilderness somewhere to do any kind of ritual. They were more interested in doing drugs and having sex.

There are some fundamentalists in certain religions that see Satanic rituals everywhere. I used to be a Volunteer Ranger with the Forest Service. There were instances of "Satanic" residuals in the forest, left by teens wanting to have a bit of twisted fun with subsequent visitors.

A bit of critical thinking would lead anyone to know that the Satanists want something for nothing. They do not put a lot of effort into anything.

A bowl of chicken bones sounds lightweight. After I learned what Menudo was made of, I became convinced that anyone who enjoys that stuff must totally be into Satan.

My dad said when he was a teenager (in the 60's), they befriended a well known hermit who lived deep in Turnbull Canyon. Isn't strange you never hear about hermits anymore? Now people are just "homeless" or "transients."

A bowl with chicken bones? I bet a Satanist was having lunch. People used to say the same thing about the Errol Flynn estate, that satanists had secret rituals there, but no matter how often we looked, we found nothing. Mind you, the empty beer bottles, minor vandalism, and silly antics of bored teens (that strangely seemed to follow us) might have given others that idea as well!

I'm thinking I'll need to make a mini-road trip over there now. With crucifix in hand.

Heheheh, Cindy, does anyone else besides me know where Hacienda Heights is?

In high school, driving Turnbull Canyon seemed to be one of those rites of passage - everyone has to do it. When my friends and I did it, I remember seeing a makeshift memorial on the road, closer to the Whittier side. I think it was for Gaxiola.

But you're right. It is definitely a creepy road to drive.
