Barney’s Beanery has pitchers of beer…

Barney’s Beanery is one of my favorite bars in LA. Most of my friends don’t think it’s cool to go there, but Barney’s is so uncool it’s cool in my book. Sure you gotta deal with the occasional sports game, annoying sports fans and karaoke night is a total buzzkill, but where else can you go in Hollywood and hear Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Soundgarden, The Beatles, Nirvana, The Pixies, The Who and The Doors on the jukebox while drinking a pitcher of beer for $13? Nowhere that I know of… if such a place does exist, lemme know and I’m there. Plus back in the day, when it actually was cool, The Doors, The Stooges (Funhouse was recorded across the street in the building that’s now Rite Aid), John Lennon and tons of other rockers used to party there. Izzy Stradlin of Guns N’ Roses even got kicked out for pissing on the bar. It really doesn’t get any better than that now does it? As for the food, it ain’t bad but it kind of all tastes the same. But then again, if you’re drinking properly, you won’t really notice. Oh and the waitresses are mint! YEAH!

P.S. I figured by now people would have commented and filled me in on other places in Hollywood with pitchers of beer. Is this really the only place around with this important item for sale? Say it ain’t so!

  1. Barney’s is one of my favorite places in LA… I love any bar or restaurant that has the mild stink of beer soaked into the wood. And they have air hockey!

The question is, where does it rank of the Kiefer scale?

  2. It’s been going down hill since they got rid of the “No Fags” sign…

    JUST KIDDING!!!

(ok that was totally tasteless… feel free to flame me and call me a biggot)

  3. Chauncey’s chauncery

    (oops, clicked the wrong button)

Chauncey’s still working there! I have not been there for years, it’s good to hear she’s still there.

Jim Morrison also got 86’d for his barroom “relief”. I’ve seen Julian Lennon there but not his dad. Joe Cocker was there once or twice. Lou Diamond Phillips had been known to get pretty wild there.

Back in the ’60s it was a hangout for the LA art crowd: Ed Ruscha, Laddy Dill, Joe Goode were some of the painters. Janice Joplin used to drop in whenever she came to town. She was there the night she died, having a few late-night drinks after a recording session.

Oh… and Barney’s Beanery was featured in the pilot episode of “Colombo”

The guy who used to own it (before “Cue’s” bought it) used to own a beer distribution company. That’s probably why they still serve pitchers. There used to be over 300 different brands of beer, and you could get a pitcher of any of the 25 or so beers on tap!

  4. Oooh, not to change the subject, but I went to the Barney’s on Colorado in Pasadena last weekend and it’s super lame. They faked all of the old weirdness that the orignial built up over the years so it feels super artificial. And the onion ring recipie is different. No soul.

  5. There must’ve been a management change or something. The last time I was at Barney’s they were playing 20 minute disco songs and Kid Rock. And we all know Joe C was the true talent in Kid Rock’s entourage.
