New, crappier cars from Chevy

[click if you must, but why would you want to see it bigger?]

I came upon a flock of these really ugly beasts on the eastbound 210 freeway today. Couldn’t figure out wtf they were at first sight, as I got closer I spotted the Chevy logo and Michigan manufacture plates.

First there was one, then two then a total of six of these putrid monsters all lined up. Once back at home, a quick Google revealed that what I’d seen was the “Chevrolet Meriva,” a tiny (looks like you’ll be the loser in a battle with a shopping cart) 4cyl car, so far built and sold only in Brazil.

Please tell me that GM isn’t so desperate for a small car they are scraping the bottom of their 3rd world barrel for something to palm off here.

  1. Yeah! Why bring in small cars when you can get a big ass honkin’, rootin’, tootin’ monster SUV/truck?! Why bother getting anything from other countries, who primarily use small vehicles, when we want huge vehicles to overcompensate for our penises!

Seriously though, I don’t like that car, but don’t fucking crap on it because it’s small. There’s worse shit out there to boot (e.g. those Scion box cars).

  2. It looks like some of the small cars which are common in Mexico (The Chevrolet “Chevy” for example is about that size. There’s also the Ford Ka, and a few others that I can’t think of off the top of my head).

  3. At least the Ka is CUTE. I was in Mexico last November and fell in love with them. This thing is just gross.

  4. HA! Love the KA, it has style and fell in love with it when I first saw it in London in ’99. I want one so bad but alas its not to be had. I think the “crap” on this box was that its a crap car and GM has a better pool to draw from.

  5. Is that the Aveo? It looks like one. I rented one recently and it was a lot of fun, actually. A sub-compact with enough headroom for a tall person! Sure, it’s ugly, and should really be electric, but not a bad drive. For an Amercian car.

  6. The Times ran an article lately about bottom-price line cars, and how they are becoming more popular and acceptable. I agree, it’s ugly – but it’s probably very fuel efficient, and there’s probably a lot of people who aren’t as aesthetically offended. After all, SOMEONE has to buy all those boxy Neon-esque four door sedans…

Besides, since we can’t get SmartCars in the States like in Canada or Europe (stupid US insurance laws), this may be Chevy’s attempt at finding something popular in another country to sell instead. Brazil, after all, like India, has an awful lot of Western/1st world cultural influences, including commercial tastes.

  8. Small cars are fine by me, I’ve always driven small cars (Honda civics, VW Bugs, etc) and with LA traffice and oil and the environment, etc etc, we should only have small cars.

Can I vent here about one of the WORST cars on the roads today? The Dodge Caliber. We rented one a trip recently and holy cow it is AWFUL. The biggest problem–you can’t see out. The windsheild is tiny (I guess the style is that the car looks “chopped”.) and the supports to the roof between windows is HUGE so when you are turning left, you have to lean foward to see if you are going to hit anything. Plus all the inside stuff is super cheap plastic. Just terrible. We own Hondas and Acuras currently, (VW before that) and man oh man, no wonder american car makers are in the toilet. Who’s buying that junk?

  9. Perhaps the photo was taken at a good angle, but the car doesn’t look as horrible as you make it out to be. Plain, perhaps, but it isn’t as bad as the Scion xA or xB, Chevy Avalanche, et al.
