Computer Deduction

I woke up this morning to absolute quiet. No sirens, no barking, no alarm clock, no white noise from the air filter, no soft whir of the myriad of electronics and no lights. The power was out. Had we blown a fuse? Was it just our house? Our block? How to find out?

I went to my computer running on battery power and ascertained from the amount in my battery, the power had been out for a little over an hour. Then I checked my WiFi. Usually there are a minimum of 10 different networks in my area, but this morning there was only one: West Hollywood WiFi (yes the city offers WiFi at the nearby park). So I knew the answer. The power had been out in the entire block for about an hour.

And all that, without even picking up a phone.
