Make Final Arrangements Now… the yesterday’s ABC News blog, aka “The Blotter”:

While no extra safeguards are in place, U.S. law enforcement are not ignoring the possible significance of tomorrow’s date, August 22, a date that marks an important historic event on the Islamic calendar… This year, August 22 marks the holy day on the Islamic calendar that is the day of reckoning for Shiites. Some Shiite sects believe that August 22 could correspond to the end of the world.

Indeed, I haven’t found any indication online that the LAPD or other local agencies are concerned about any threats out of the ordinary.

However, this provides as good an excuse as any to open the floor on the subject of racial profiling, especially the concept proposed by House Homeland Security Chairman Peter King to create special lines at the airport for travellers who appear to be of Middle Eastern descent. (more at New York Newsday)

I have some very strong opinions on this issue, and if we’re not all killed in a nuclear holocaust today I may address this again later this week. But in the meantime, what do the citizens of Los Angeles think about this topic?

  1. Well, the fact of the matter is that I had a couple worries about Iran’s leader’s intentions, but since the bombs haven’t started dropping, I think we’re pretty okay.

Racial profiling is bad, and I didn’t worry about people living here in the US causing issues, I worried about the enemies we have abroad taking advantage of a significant date. I just wish most of the world liked us a little better, not that we deserve it, just would make me worry less.

  2. The probem with racial/ethnic profiling is twofold:

    1. You catch a LOT of false positives. All of the 9/11 hijackers were middle eastern, true, but not all middle easterners are terrorists. What we end up doing is pissing off the people who should be our best information source (note, for example, that without the cooperation of the muslim community in the uk, the recent arrests would not have happened).

    2. You give a recipe for how to sneak terrorists past security. Not all terrorists are bearded middle-easterners. In fact, there were efforts made by the 9/11 hijackers to create the illusion that they were anything but devout muslims (e.g., drinking alcohol, going to strip clubs). Focus your attention on people who look like terrorists and the terrorists will look like anything but. There are radical muslims on all cultures and from all ethnic groups.

  3. That’s a pretty grim headline to wake up to there my man. Racial profiling…all for it btw! Small price to pay for an innocent, law abiding muslim resident or visitor, waiting in a special line. It is for their safety as well, no?? I’ll be keeping an eye out for your follow up blog later in the week.

And the crucified boys sing….Always look on the bright side of life..whistle..whistle….!

  4. Racial profiling is a terrifying step in the very wrong direction. I don’t even know where to begin registering my horror at that suggestion.
