Registering a DBA in Los Angeles Without Driving to Norwalk?

Hey, I am looking to register a DBA/fictitious business name here in Los Angeles County. Last time I did this, I had to drive to Norwalk to set things up. So it’s not a huge deal, but if I can avoid it by registering my name online, I would like to. Anyone done this? My Google search has returned a lot of middling results.

  1. No, you can’t do it online. You can download the form and do it by mail, but you have to wait several weeks to get your paperwork back instead of having it immediately.

  2. Yes, you can do it online, as I have done recently.
LegalZoom.com is the place we picked after a little research. It is a little more than doing it locally, as I have done in the past here in Studio City, but it was worth the convenience.

  3. I also endorse LegalZoom.com, having used them for a couple of DBAs and one incorporation.

They have the added novelty bonus of being founded by former OJ Simpson attorney Robert Shapiro. Call it an L.A. thing.

No, that’s still not filing your DBA online. It’s paying somebody else to file your DBA for you. You might argue it’s just semantics, but there is a difference. It also costs $100 for a $23 process. I suppose, though, that they include publishing which makes it a better deal.

  5. Yes, it is semantics. I did it online using legalzoom.com, I have my DBA and business bank account. (Insert childish raspberry sound here).
