Michelle is going for the gold

Michelle_Kwan.jpg At the ripe old age of 25, local skating legend Michelle Kwan is going to get her LAST SHOT at gold. Did you get that?

IT’S HER LAST SHOT!!!1!!!1!!11

LAST!

FINAL!

LAST!!!

Oops. Sorry I got caught up in all those headlines. Really, the big news (if it is even big or news) is that Michelle Kwan has been cleared to skate as part of the US Olympic team.

Kwan jumps way to last shot at Olympic gold

By NANCY ARMOUR, AP National Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michelle Kwan is going to Turin, and she’s going for gold.

Kwan sealed her spot on the Olympic team Friday, showing a five-person monitoring committee with jumps, spins and those majestic spirals what she said two weeks ago: She’ll be healthy enough to compete in Turin.

And compete with the best.

“I’m thinking gold is good,” Kwan said at a news conference after the monitoring committee announced its decision. “I’m staying positive, feeling good. I’m injury free. So right now, it’s just going for it.” [full story]

PS – If it sounds like I’m hating on Michelle, I’m not. I’m actually a huge fan and want to see her get that gold. But sheesh… enough with that “last chance” stuff?

  1. I saw her on a calendar in a bakery in Chinatown today. I told my friend about her skating in front of the panel and was curious about whether or not she’d made it. I’m pulling for her. (Confession: I cried when Tara Lipinski won the gold in ’98.)

  2. Well, what I’m sick of is the headlines talking about how Sasha Cohen “finally” won a national championship without mentioning that the only way she did it was because Michelle Kwan wouldn’t be there. But I’ve hated Sasha for a long time because she uses intimidation to (try) to get an edge.

  3. I am sorry to say that I am so sick of hearing of Michelle Kvan!!She is way,way overrated, always been!!Do not understand the big Fuss about her!Good and stable, but that is all.Sick of the media coverage of her.I have followed Sasha Cohen since she is was a young girl. She is the first American girl finally that is OUSTANDING!!!!She will get International respect due to her tremendes style and talent, and is the first American that has it all!!Classy, style, skills, and ELEGANCE.If she skates well, she will win!

  4. I agree with Agnethe, that there is way too
much praise about Michelle. It seemed like all the media could talk about was Michelle going for the Gold. It was like no other skaters were going to compete aganist her. I think that MIchelle knew that she would not be able to win the Gold with the new type of judging, especially since she did not compete with the other giri’s before the Olypmic games in the U.S.
I think Sasha could skate rings around her.

  6. i’ve been watching her for years wishing she would go away – her routines are boring – degree of difficulty is … well, they’re not difficult, that’s why she has no gold medal

she should be ashamed for her selfishness – she knew she physically was unable to compete when she took emily hughes spot on the team, depriving emily of her spot during the opening ceremonies – lust for gold did in michelle – i’m glad she’s gone

  7. I,m afraid Gary Fryer has it wrong. If Michelle had not fallen on the 2002 program she would have won the gold, despite Hughe’s performance Michelle was a better skater than either girl that beat her. She had bad luck in falling that can happen anytime. She made a serious mistake this year when her body told her she was tight in the groin area and she did the triple anyway. Even more unbelievable is that she went ahead without her coach who would have stopped her. She should have done a light routine and returnd for heat therapy until that area was flexible. She would still be trainging if she had . Could she have won? her chances were about 30%. But she would not have had the pressure of being the favorite. And no law existed in the sky that said Sasha Cohen-a self centered arrogant woman-would not have fallen. And Michelle was starting to hit the triples. The odds were against her but she could have done it.
