thursday concert round up

One of the things I love about L.A. is that there’s a ridiculous amount of exceptionally talented indie-label and unsigned artists performing in the city. Whether they’re local (I see a lot of friends and friends-of-friends bands) or visiting, there’s dozens of shows every month worth checking out.

So here’s a couple artists to see on a Thursday night. The first is an early show by my friend Bryan Master at Hotel Cafe. Bryan plays heart-breaking acoustic rock. He usually plays solo with a guitar, but manages to make one guitar sound like a whole guitar section. He’s playing at Hotel Cafe (on the ‘Wenga corridor, across from Beauty Bar) at 8pm, or, as he puts it, “early enough that you can still catch ‘My Name Is Earl'” (I’m not sure of cost, but Hotel Cafe is usually $5)

The next is the show I’m hoping to hit, provided my CODEPINK meeting lets out in time – Fair to Midland at the Roxy. They’re one of a few bands playing, but the show is free to the first hundred people who show up with the flyer from their website (FTMband.com) before 8:30. I found these guys when they MySpace friend-requested me, and was immediately enthralled. They have a great deal of musical instrument talent, and play sorrowful songs with great energy and intensity. They’re also playing a Saturday show in Malibu, and a Sunday Viper Room show.

Go forth, and rock out!
