FAB Market Tomorrow

4:40 pm in Uncategorized by Spencer Cross

fab.gifSelah Artistic Giving Center is hosting their seasonal marketplace for the arts, FAB Market, downtown tomorrow. The event is at 330 Santa Fe from 12-9PM. Selah does some interesting stuff, but they really, really need to get on top of their PR. Don’t go looking at their website for more info about this, because the last one they have any info about is from July. Instead, click the thumb on the right for the backside of their flyer.

Today’s Google Maps Hack – Restaurant Reviews

4:15 pm in Uncategorized by Sean Bonner

Crap! I really miss LA Blogs not having an RSS feed anymore. Instead I have to hear from Mack that Jonah threw this together. And man is it cool. And the stuff from here will be in there soon too. Have I mentioned today how much I like food? If it wasn’t for food I’d probably be dead.

Wireless classrooms

4:08 pm in Uncategorized by la_cindym

I know not all UCLA buildings are wireless hotspots, but I love the fact that my buidling is. Even though I’m in class right now, I can check my email when the conversation gets boring and see what’s up for the weekend on b.la.

However, some profs might not like it.

I wonder if other LA-area institutions of higher education (or K-12 schools) are equipped with wireless network access around campus.

Someone At LATimes.com Has a Sense of Humor

power.jpg

Drifting through the L.A. Times website I clicked to this heatwave-induced power deficit story in which the monitor of the state’s grid is advising us to cut back on the power we use. After scrolling down the first few paragraphs, there I am face to face with a gassy looking Schwarzenpooper who wants to “Give the power back to the people!”

Oh Christ! That guy again?

9:52 am in Uncategorized by Sean Bonner

Robertson_dancer.jpgIndeed it is that guy again.

The folks at Losanjealous have captured him on film in all of his Robertson Danciness. Yes, it’s the Robertson Dancer. Back when I worked near Robertson I’d see this guy on a daily basis. Every day more crazy than the last. If for some reason none of this is making sense to you then it’s a safe bet that you’ve never driven down Robertson between Wilshire and Beverly when the sun was out, because otherwise you would have seen this guy, in spandex and rollerblades, getting his crazy ass dance on. I’m sure there’s someone who has some backstory on this guy right?

Obscenity A Low Priority?

12:06 am in LA by la_koga

Via LukeIsBack.com (all links NSFW):

Mike Ramone writes on AVN.com:

Just had drinks with an old mainstream reporter friend of mine who has contacts within the L.A. branch of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, who tell her they’re being pressured by Washington to aggressively initiate obscenity prosecutions against [the adult] industry. The attitude of the L.A. branch, however, is that in this post 9/11 world, obscenity prosecutions are very low priority and hence, they’re trying to stall Washington as much as possible – maybe like until 2008 when Bush is out of office? Stay tuned.

This is very interesting, especially given the recent directive by Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales.

¿Que Pasa Aquí?

7:57 pm in Uncategorized by Dave Bullock / eecue

Here are some things I have been meaning to post about starting with tonight in Hollywood at the former Martini Lounge, now The Larchmont on Melrose East of Vine is Respect, LA’s longest running Drum’n'Bass club, will be host to A-Sides from Metalheadz / East Side Records out of the UK.

If you agree that not all street art blows, this Sunday at New Image Art on Santa Monica and Fairfax you should check out the Skullphone, Bäst and Faile show. You will be treated to a special feature in the bathroom, UNATION of San Pedro.

Also this Saturday, BETALEVEL the new incarnation of the c-level collective, will be hosting another Swap Meet in their back alley subterranean lair in Chinatown where you can experience piracy and karaoke in a convivial atmosphere.

The Downtown LA Farmer’s Market is going to keep going for the next 6 months which totally rocks for me as it is almost as good as having a supermarket in walking distance, because driving 10 minutes to get decent groceries sucks.

The 8th season of Downtown on Ice at Pershing Square starts the 17th of November so if you want skate on an elevated platform of ice above the grass in balmy 80 degree “winter” weather, hop on the Red Line and come on down. The skating is available from 9am to 10pm on Friday through Sunday and from noon ’till nine the rest of the week and will run you $6 for an hour of skating and $2 to rent a pair of skates which you won’t need, because you, like all angelinos, own at least one pair of ice skates.

At the California Science Center you can check out the IMAX 3D Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D produced by Tom Hanks, the film uses unreleased footage from NASA which will enable you to “witness what 12 extraordinary astronaughts saw, heard, felt, thought and did” screening all day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23 at the Festival of Flight, admission is gratis, though parking will run you $6.

Oh and this relates to LA because Spike Lee is quoted talking about Chinatown, the great old movie about LA, but really this link should be on the nola mblog.

Google Map Hack of Culver City Art Galleries

1:44 pm in Uncategorized by Sean Bonner

ccagmap.jpg

Caryn mentioned this the other day but I thought I wanted to gush over it a little more. As many of you know a few months back we moved sixspace into a cluster of galleries in Culver City. Since then the question we’ve been asked most is “Where are the other galleries I can walk to?” So the other day we decided to print up some maps and also put something online. A trip to Dotster, a new Upcoming group and a little back and forth with fellow B.laer eecue who helped out with the Google Map Hackage and CulverCityArtGalleries.com was born. The focus here is the galleries in the few blocks around Venice/La Cienega/Washington but you can also zoom out and see the ones downtown and in other parts of Culver City. The funny thing is, at the rate galleries are moving to this area this thing is going to be out of date in a few weeks! Good stuff.

Compassionate Care Comes to Echo Park

1:38 pm in Uncategorized by Spencer Cross

I don’t really follow what’s going on with the battle over medical marijuna. I was under the impression that the store fronts in Los Angeles that were distributing it were being cracked down on using questionably legal methods. But my belief that they were all being forcibly put out of business is mistaken because it turns out that “Silverlake 13th District Los Angeles Compassionate Act Care” featuring “Medical Cannabis, Edibles, and Extracts for Qualified Patients in accordance with H&S Code 11362.5″ is opening (or maybe has opened) right here in Echo Park. So, the fight goes on I guess.
