Cahuenga Blvd. Intersection Accident-Prone…

Via NBC4:

LOS ANGELES — Several vehicles were mangled in a multi-car crash in Hollywood early Wednesday, and police say the accident was caused by a suspected drunken driver.

The accident happened at about 2 a.m. at the corner of Cahuenga Boulevard and Odin Street, in the Whitley Heights neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills.

Police said the speeding driver crashed into another moving car and at least three cars parked on the street. …

Although none of the injuries in this latest accident were life-threatening, there have been numerous accidents at that intersection, and some of them have been fatal, according to neighbors.

One neighbor said his car has been hit 15 times by suspected drunking drivers coming around the curve on Cahuenga Boulevard. …

Police told NBC4’s Ross Becker that the city does not plan to do anything about the curve; he said the problem is not the street but the drunken drivers leaving nearby Hollywood clubs who drive too fast around the corner.

  1. If I recall, it’s a little off-camber (the road surface falls off to the right on the left turn) and idiots who don’t know how to drive will not realize it and spin out fairly easily, especially at night after too many adult beverages.

Seems like a great place for a sobrity check-point!

Thats the way to address a problem hot spot – say there’s nothing to do about it. Screw the safe and sober drivers who happen to be passing through!

Seriously, something has to be done. Add an extra stop light? Speed bumps (I know, impractical for the location)? Or, as suggested, periodic sobriety check points? Maybe a drive thru 24/7 liquor store at the corner of Odin and Cahuenga?

  3. The problem is very much the street! My girlfriend lives right by the Hollywood Bowl on Highland and I often come up Odin and take a left on Cahuengha. That intersection scares the sh*t out of me. There is a stop sign for the left lane only and people turning left from Odin have the right of way. I have almost been involved in about 4 acidents there and unless you really understand how the intersection operates, which is totally illogical, you are quite likely to screw it up…and that’s before you’ve had anything to drink!

  4. You gotta love the guy who insists on parking his car in the same spot regardless of being hit 15 times. He must have one hell of a savings account from cashing in all those checks from his insurance. Heh.

  5. I used to live at the south end of Barrington. Cars along that stretch would get scraped or totalled with great regularity. Just like the section of Cahuenga at Odin, the city or police didn’t care.
Of course, I borrowed my girlfriend’s car one night and had it parked on the street when I heard crashing. Indeed, the car was sidestruck along with a few other cars. The vehicle responsible had finally been stopped by the tail end of a pick up. While my girlfriend’s car only appeared to have cosmetic damage (it actually was totalled – the axis was bent when the car’s tire was hit), I felt worse for a guy who’s new SUV had a giant gouge along its side – the SUV still had its sales sticker on a side window.
When I told the SUV owner how unlucky he was, he explained that his new car wasn’t hit that night, but two days prior in approximately the same spot.
