Topanga Fire: Day Five…

It’s been five days since the Topanga fire started on Wednesday, and yet with 85% of the fire in containment, I was still able to smell smoke in the air amidst the clouds and fog this morning in Chatsworth.

I also drove to a carpool buddy’s house in West Hills and noticed that traffic still seems to be affected by the fire, as traffic was much heavier than usual on those city streets, particularly at Saticoy west of Roscoe Fallbrook.

(BTW, this photo was taken last Wednesday, not this morning.)

  1. I climbed to the peak of Castle Peak yesterday to check out how much area had burned along the Ventura County line near West Hills. On my way to the trailhead a woman informed me that hiking into the newly opened Ahmanson Ranch would carry a $500 fine because there are still embers burning in the area, so they’re trying to keep people out for their own safety.

Congrats really go to the firefighters who as far as I can tell saved every home that was imminent danger visible from the peak.

  2. Yeah, I thought about hiking around Chatsworth Park this past weekend to get some photos, but decided against it. I’ll check it out this coming weekend.
