Blues off Dana Point

I got an email this evening from Robin alerting me to some fun whale watch news:

Brett Eller, captain of Dana Wharf’s “Sum Fun” whale watching boat, reports that five blue whales are lingering five miles out from Dana Point Harbor, providing passengers aboard the Ocean Adventure cruises, a stunning view of the magnificent creatures.

Blue whales are seen off of the Palisades every once in a while but not usually when we’ve got such nice, cooperative weather. Even if you go and don’t see blue whales, you’re almost guaranteed to see dolphins (in fact, you’ll get a raincheck if you don’t). It’s an evening cruise, so maybe we should all take off work early and head down to Dana Wharf Sportfishing one night. I’ve never sailed with them before, so I can’t tell you if they’re good or bad, but I’m happy that folks are getting to see blue whales so close to Los Angeles. (See my previous whale entries: here, here, here, here, here & here.)

  1. Today was an excellent day to see marine life in the Palisades area. The water was clean and tranquil and I spotted close swimming dolphins, rays, seals, cranes…

Just watch out for the jellys. (The dead ones can sink to the bottom and they are HUGE.)

Good chance that Tuesday may be just as well as today.
