Laurel Canyon…

Just a little while ago, I was driving northbound from Crescent Heights towards Mulholland back into the Valley and it was a bitch, as drivers had to make a left or right onto Mulholland once they got to the top of the hill. On the way downhill, I was was wondering why the southbound lanes of Laurel Canyon were closed from Ventura all the way up to Mulholland, and sure enough, LAFD News and Info has the scoop:

*TRAFFIC ADVISORY* 3000 BLOCK N LAUREL CYN BL X DONA DOROTEA DR {TG592-J1} LAUREL CANYON WILL BE CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FOR UNKNOWN DURATION DUE TO WATER MAIN BREAK; DWP ENROUTE WITH UNK ETA; CH:8 TAC:3 TIME:1627 *NFD* -Humphrey ###

I had a feeling it was due to water, as I’d seen it running down the sides of the street on the way uphill. Still, I make it a point to check a website or two to see what traffic’s like before I make the trip to work and back home, and somehow I missed this advisory!

UPDATE: According to NBC, “City crews on Thursday morning repaired a water main that had ruptured beneath Laurel Canyon Boulevard, and a massive sinkhole caused by the break might be filled in by the evening, according to a utility official. … Los Angeles Department of Transportation workers restricted access Wednesday and Thursday to Laurel Canyon Boulevard, a main connector between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley, because of the sinkhole, according to the DOT. The 16-inch main broke at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday along Laurel Canyon Boulevard at Dona Dorotea Drive, Department of Water and Power spokeswoman MaryAnne Pierson said.”
