I See Hawks In L.A.

The search for this Cooper’s hawk began with the discovery of blood drops among a bed of downy mockingbird dove feathers in the backyard. Click the image for a larger version and/or read all about my CSI: Backyard experience here.

  1. I had a similar experience when I was living in Brooklyn, but unfortunately, I didn’t take photos. I looked out into my backyard one day and saw a dead, mangled pigeon on the picnic table. I fretted about how to dispose of the body, and I decided to deal with it later. When I woke the next morning and checked on the carcass, I found a peregrine falcon with his claws on the dead bird (his victim from the start?), and before my eyes, he flew away with it. Problem solved.

  2. I see them all the time! There’s a couple that are a regular in my neighborhood, they like to hang out on the crossing of Overland and 10.
