I first met Jose two years ago this upcoming weekend. The 21-year-old corporal in the Marines had only been back in L.A. a couple months after being killed in Iraq, and it was his gleaming white headstone standing out among all the weathered ones at the Los Angeles National Cemetery that drew me to his grave.
When I visited last May, Jose had a new neighbor, Allan a staff sergeant with the Marines who’d come home a month earlier, killed in Iraq that April just shy of his 29th birthday.
On one hand, it’s nice Jose has some company, but on the other hand, when I drop by Monday to visit Section 9 Row N, I’m really hoping there’s no one new to meet ó but I’m pretty sure there will be. And if there are, I’ll honor their memory and the ultimate sacrifice they made as well.
The L.A. National Cemetery will be open Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Memorial Day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
