Gentrification Part 2.5

Hot on the heels of my two earlier posts comes this event announcement:

Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg presents…
Gentrification in Los Angeles

Thursday, April 14, 7pm
The Highlands Hall
104 N. Avenue 56 (at Figueroa)
Los Angeles, CA 90042

The forum will feature a screening of a film by Stephanie Cisneros, a
local Echo Park resident and Downtown Magnets High School student.
Stephanie’s film focuses on the topic of gentrification, and sets out to
render the viewpoints of the working-class and immigrant populations of
Echo Park.

The screening will be followed by a discussion panel on gentrification,
moderated by Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg.

Click on the thumb for the detailed English flyer. You can also hit me up for a Spanish version if you want it. The idea of watching a film by a high school student fills me with dread, but the panel discussion looks promising.

  1. I picture this…….

Fingers pointing at Spencer along with cries of EL DIABLO, EL DIABLO.

    Was that wrong of me?

  2. Gee, I wonder if Jackie will discuss her popular Costco building project with the residents of Atwater? Oh, right–nothing “gentry” about a big box store.

  3. Is it a sign of gentrification that she has to go all the way to Highland Park to find a place that will screen the film?

  4. I’m sure it’s a matter of scheduling more than anything, considering that one of the sponsors is Echo Park Film Center.

I’m wondering if it’s an appropriate forum in which to ask Mrs. Goldberg about her comments lately about nobody crossing La Brea to see art. Especially since one of the event participants is located right next to an Echo Park gallery.
