A post today on MetaFilter is a spiffy summary of the stories behind a couple of LA-related (well, one LA, one San Diego) songs, namely the Knack’s “My Sharona” and the Boomtown Rats’ “I Don’t Like Mondays.”
Sharona, apparently, is a real person who today sells real estate in LA. And yes, that is her “mysharona.com” domain name. :)
My Sharona has had an impact on my ability to understand the entertainers mind, there’s something simpatico. You’ve got to care to the n’th degree. You can’t drop the ball for one minute.
Not quite as catchy as
Ooh my little pretty one, pretty one.
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Ooh you make my motor run, my motor run.
Gun it comin’ off the line Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona…
…but probably more likely to sell real estate. Or at least to a higher class of entertainer.
Oh, and the “I Don’t Like Mondays” story? A 16-year-old girl who killed a principal and a custodian, and wounded eight school kids and a cop.
Reality bites, doesn’t it?
