When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

pounhunter.jpg Not strictly L.A.-related, apart perhaps from the astounding movies inspired by him, but Hunter S. Thompson has passed away, unfortunately by his own hand.

When bloggers get a little too full of themselves or of their medium, point them toward HST — the man was doing it decades before any current pretender fired up a web browser. I daresay if it weren’t for him and those he inspired, we wouldn’t be here spewing words into the ether:

So much for Objective Journalism. DonÔøΩt bother to look for it hereÔøΩnot under any byline of mine; or anyone else I can think of. With the possible exception of things like box scores, race results, and stock market tabulations, there is no such thing as Objective Journalism. The phrase itself is a pompous contradiction in terms.

  1. Nothin’ but love for the patron saint of Gonzo journalism. RIP Hunter.
“I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone…. but they’ve always worked for me.”

  2. Ah, well said. Let me pour a tall glass of Wild Turkey over ice and open Fear and Loathing to any page…sigh
