The Grilled Cheese Stands Alone

What do you get when you cross the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese, a group of professional competitive eaters, 10 minutes with a pile of grilled cheese sandwiches and Muscle Beach in Venice? Ya get the event that I just returned from and it was freakin’ awesome. Who knew that a competitive eating competition could be so entertaining? There was action, a rap by one of the competitors, theme songs for each of the contestants and of course, the Passion of the Toast. The event, sponsored by GoldenPalace.com, featured the infamous Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese. I only admired it from afar, but it was still very entertaining to see a piece of pop culture in person.

Most amazing of all was the winner, Sonya Thomas, pictured right. This 105-lb. woman packed away 25 sandwiches in 10 minutes, easily beating 405-lb. Eric Booker, 409-lb. Cookie Jarvis, among others. Sonya’s previous eating records include 11 lbs of cheesecake in 9 minutes, 65 hard boiled eggs in 6 minutes, and 36 dozen oysters in 10 minutes. Girl power at its finest.
