LA Marathon here I come…

I’ve taken to running in the mornings. Can anyone tell me how far it is around Echo Park Lake? I haven’t been able to find the distance online and the only map I have isn’t big enough to get an accurate measurement.

If nobody knows, maybe I’ll hold a contest…best guess wins…what? And while I’m on the topic, how about Best Movie Featuring Shots Of Echo Park? And how many people have drowned there?

  1. I haven’t been running around Echo Park for a while. I would guess 3/4 mile. Do you know anyone who will lend you their GPS?

  2. I have a Garmin Forerunner that’ll do the GPS trick around EP lake nicely (FYI from Sunset Boulevard up Silver Lake Blvd around the reservoir and back is about 4 miles). I’ll see if I can get the distance around EPL this weekend. If not my guess would be with Jason: 3/4s of a mile.

As to movies that best feature that particular body of water, the only two that come to mind are “Echo Park” (1986) with Timothy Hulce and Susan Dey, and I believe “Jack’s Back” with James Spader (playing twins!) made in 1988.

Drownings? Have no idea if anyone’s died that way there, but I wouldn’t doubt that a body or two has been pulled from the water.

I do know that the north cove (where the lotuses bloom every summer) is home to a seemingly thriving population of red-eared slider turtles. On a visit there in June I counted four of them. in and around the lotus pads.

  3. Best Movie = Chinatown

Also, Echo park used to be something like 20 acres with 3 bandstands & quite the scene before the 101 was built…

  4. Doh… Chinatown! That’s right! Echo Park don’t get none better than its scenes in CT.

  5. If I remember correctly, “Mi Vida Loca” was supposed to take place in Echo Park. What about “Blood In, Blood Out”? I don’t remember where that one took place, but it’s a great movie! “Tres puntos like spider!”

  6. I’ve been trying to determine this bit of information myself. I’ve asked parks people, reference librarians, and even the damn Coast Guard. Nada. My next step was to figure out some way to measure it myself. Hadn’t thought of the GPS route.

Echo Park also appears in Chinatown.

  7. Sweet. Thanks for the info…that means 29.5 laps = my own private marathon. Not like I’m really going to do it.
