Without proper air flow, your PC can lock up, reboot, and do other seemingly odd things. This weekend, my CPU heatsink / fan combo motor shuffled off its mortal coil. It last spun at 11:30 this morning. I called around town, looking for the best on-site prices and schedules. Wound up going with SpeedyTech. Within two hours, I was back up and running – for less than $125 (quality parts and labor). Any other doorstop-tech recommendations for LA?

You should have gone to the Apple Store in the first place.
It’s fairly trivial to replace a heatsink/fan combo unit.
I’m sure Fry’s would have had an adequate replacement part. AMD & Intel processor sockets have standard sizing and putting in a new fan basically requires one clip.
My suggestion would be to call a more technically minded friend and have her/him show you how to do it.
If you are brave enough to enter the nerve-center of geek-dom, Fry’s Electronics, you will probably find your heat-sinkÖ and a bag of chipsÖ and a dishwasherÖ and the latest Spiderman comic bookÖ and date for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night**.
