Cooking? Cooking?

I’ve finally decided that my bank account can no longer afford to have me eat all of my meals out. I’m actually not a bad cook when pressed into service. But I’m somewhat, shall we say, mechanical. A slave to a recipe. So I’ve decided that I need to take a cooking class. Does anybody have a recommendation for a good cooking class which focuses on basic technique. A class designed around preparing food for one would also be good. Any thoughts?

  1. Actually, instead of going to cooking class, I would suggest watching Food Network.

They have several shows that explain how to cook simply.

My favorite is Good Eats with Alton Brown. Each episode, he explains a certain type of food and how to cook it.

Another good show is How to Boil Water, a show for new cooks. Also, 30 Minute Meals shows a lot of good things you can make quickly.

Take a look at the shows and it will give you an idea of the basics. Maybe you’d get more value from the cooking classes if you see things first on TV.

  2. Oh, I am familiar with Food Network and especially the genius show that is Good Eats. I’ve even got A.B. on my blogroll. But for some reason, it doesn’t seem to translate into actual cooking ability. I find that I learn better in a class environment.
